Skip sizes at a glance

Which skip fits your project?

Skips are measured in cubic yards. These are typical UK sizes; the sizes on offer vary, so confirm what is available when you call.

2 to 3 cubic yards

Mini skip

Small bathroom refits, garden tidy-ups and clear-outs where space is tight.

4 to 5 cubic yards

Midi skip

Kitchen refits, small garden projects and loft or garage clear-outs.

6 to 8 cubic yards

Builder's skip

Renovations and heavier waste such as rubble and soil. The most common size.

10 to 16 cubic yards

Maxi skip

Bulky, lighter waste such as furniture and packaging. Not usually for heavy rubble.

A few useful answers

Before the skip.
Before the call.

Good planning starts with the right questions. For details about your property or a specific waste type, speak to your area contact.

Find your area
What should I have ready when I call?+

Your delivery postcode, waste types, an estimate of the amount, preferred dates and where the skip would go. Mention narrow access, gates or overhead obstructions.

How much will my skip hire cost?+

Ask for a quote based on your location, waste, skip requirements and hire period. Confirm whether VAT, delivery, collection and any permit or extra charges are included before booking.

Will I need a permit?+

A skip placed on a public road needs the relevant permission. Solihull Council says applications must be made by the skip hire company at least two clear working days before placement. Confirm the rules for your delivery location. Read Solihull Council’s skip permit guidance.

What can't go in a skip?+

Items that usually cannot go in a general skip include asbestos, gas cylinders, batteries, fridges and freezers, TVs and other electricals, tyres, paint, oils and chemicals. Plasterboard usually has to be kept separate. Describe anything unusual when you enquire and ask about exclusions or separate handling.

How do I check who handles my waste?+

Before transferring waste, confirm the identity of the company handling it and check its waste carrier registration. GOV.UK explains how to check a registered carrier.

Can I get a particular delivery date?+

Call your area contact with your preferred dates. Availability, placement, permissions and collection arrangements need to be confirmed before booking.
